Church Square, Shepperton
From an original watercolour by Daphne Clement
The Jacobean church built in 1614 replaced the medieval church swept away by floods in 1612.
Some original stonework is incorporated in the present building.
At the time of the Doomsday survey, Shepperton boasted a "fish weir" and fishing was an important industry here until the mid 19th century.
The close proximity to the Thames and the fishing connection were probably the reasons why the church was dedicated to St. Nichlas, patron saint of sailors and fishermen.
